What to Expect at Your Osteopathy Session | Best Osteopathy Vancouver

Osteopathic practitioner treating a patient's lower back during a hands-on session at Best Osteopathy Vancouver

If you have never seen an osteopath before, it is completely normal to wonder what happens in a session. Here is a clear, honest overview of what to expect at Best Osteopathy. It runs from the moment you book through to your follow-up care.

Before Your Appointment

When you book your first appointment, you will receive an intake form to complete before you arrive. It covers your health history, previous injuries and surgeries, your current chief complaint and your therapeutic goals. Filling it in thoroughly saves time during the session. It also gives your practitioner a much clearer picture of your situation before they meet you.

Wear comfortable clothing to your appointment. Shorts, leggings or a T-shirt are ideal. Most osteopathic techniques are performed over clothing. Easy movement also makes the assessment and treatment more effective.

Your First Session

After a brief meet and greet and the signing of informed consent, your practitioner will take a thorough verbal history. It covers your symptoms, their onset and behaviour, what makes them better or worse, and any relevant health background.

A full structural assessment follows. It typically includes observing your gait, assessing range of motion in relevant joints, orthopaedic testing, and osteopathic assessment of how your entire structure is aligned and moving. This is important because osteopathy takes a whole-body approach. The source of your pain is often not where the pain is felt.

Based on this assessment, your practitioner will discuss their findings with you. They will then outline a treatment plan tailored to your situation.

The Treatment

Treatment begins in the first appointment for most patients. Osteopathic techniques include:

  • Joint mobilization
  • Muscle energy techniques
  • Craniosacral therapy
  • Myofascial release
  • Visceral manipulation

The combination used depends entirely on your assessment findings and what your body needs.

One thing that distinguishes manual osteopathy from chiropractic is the force used. In chiropractic, the fifth grade of joint mobilization is commonly used. This goes beyond the normal range of motion and produces the cracking sound many people associate with spinal adjustment. In manual osteopathy, we work within the natural range of motion. We use gentle, sustained pressure. This makes treatment well tolerated even for patients who are sensitive to discomfort.

The amount of pressure is always variable. We adjust it based on your comfort and the area being treated. We encourage communication during treatment. Let your practitioner know if anything feels uncomfortable.

After Your Session

It is common to experience mild soreness in the first 24 hours after an osteopathic session. It is similar to what you might feel after a deep massage. This is a normal response as the tissues begin to reorganize. After 24 hours, most patients notice improved flexibility, reduced pain and an overall sense of wellbeing.

Drink plenty of water after your session. Allow yourself to rest if you feel the need. Begin your exercises after the first 24 hours have passed.

Your Exercise Program

Osteopathic treatment addresses structural imbalances. However, maintaining those corrections over time requires muscle support. Your practitioner will give you a personalized at-home exercise program based on your assessment. These are simple, targeted exercises. They are designed to reinforce what was achieved in treatment and prevent the pattern from returning.

Follow-Up

At the end of your session, your practitioner will discuss how often to come back, based on your condition and response to treatment. Acute conditions often respond well in two to four sessions. Chronic or complex presentations may need more sessions over a longer period. Our guide on how many osteopathy sessions you need explains more.

You will receive a recap of your session by email. You will also get access to your exercise program through our online platform.
